The moment I gave a Dragon my business card …

Steven Bartlett made history when he entered the den aged just 28 years old as Dragons Den’s youngest-ever investor.

He’s an authentic leader with a wonderfully creative thinking, strategic mindset. He’s self-made from poverty, resilient and despite his greatness still well grounded.

Steven’s also very passionate about making a real impact on the world and often leverages his network to make a difference as well as being involved in many charitable and climate-conscious initiatives and businesses – something I’m deeply inspired by.

I met Steven last week when I attended a 2-day business event in London where he was one of the star speakers.

Before I left for the event my incredible wife Jenna gave me a timely gift – a beautifully printed and boxed tactile ‘Diary of a CEO’ personal journal, created by Steven Bartlett himself.

After the talk there was a photo opportunity with Steven … in true British fashion almost 2,000 people formed an orderly queue – the brief “have your camera ready for a quick photo”.

When my turn came, I asked Steven if he would mind signing the journal, he looked at it, responded “no problem” and then everything slowed down.

It was no longer about just having a photo; we had a great conversation as he went on to write a lovely personal message as well as sign the journal. I thanked Steven for his time and for being such an inspiration. I suddenly felt compelled to hand him my business card as I left – his response “oh wow, thanks” – it’s not every day you get to give a Dragon your business card!

That evening it got me thinking – there I was standing with the ‘digital’ Dragon in front of a ‘printed’ backdrop with hundreds of copies of his ‘printed’ book on display beside me, the ‘printed’ journal we were both consumed by and my ‘printed’ business card now in his possession – all tangible, physical assets building many new experiences!

Imagine if I had asked Steven to scan my e-card or how I would have got him to personalise my e-journal? How many people that day would have bought and cherished his book ‘Happy Sexy Millionaire’ in digital format I wonder? …

Last week I connected with a Dragon, I put my brand in his hand – who knows that could be the start of a game-changing journey. I also got ‘an extra piece of his time’ because I came with something personal to him, I connected with the Digital Dragon using print!

If you’ve got something important to say, want to get someone’s attention, or show them you care DON’T sell yourself cheap by discounting print!

Thank you to Steven Bartlett for inspiring me and thanks to the wonderful print industry that I am proud to be a part of.

Kindly,
Mark
